Remediation

Caution - only to be carried out by professionals

Can you DIY remediation?

The answer is simply NO.

Why?

  1. Because without testing every article you can never determine whether it is fully cleansed of Meth residue anyway and testing every item is an expense that is not worth it unless the item is of extreme value.

  2. The process of stripping Meth from contaminated surfaces can cause more damage.

  3. It is often cheaper and easier to just simply destroy the item but here lies the biggest hurdle you will face if you try to DIY.

  4. Most councils will not let you dispose of contaminated items in the waste facilities. Meth contaminated goods are to be treated in a similar manner to Asbestos. They must be double wrapped in plastic and disposed of in a daily covered landfill that is designated for Meth contaminated items.

  5. Skip hire companies won't hire skips to you if they find out there is Meth contaminated goods going into the skip.

  6. Ensuring you have adequate protective clothing and breathing apparatus is expensive and often difficult to obtain.

  7. Wearing inadequate protection (see picture) leaves you in danger of absorbing Meth and if you then drive a car you can run the risk of failing a random drug test and losing your licence.

  8. Absorbing Meth can be harmful to your health.

  9. DIY becomes a nightmare and so its best left to the professionals to remediate the property and remove your contents.

Beware of Cowboys

The dangers for society of DIY remediation or rogue cowboy remediation companies is far reaching and one that very few jurisdictions have actually got their heads around. We have numerous stories of homes that have been tested and cleaned by disreputable companies that have an agreement with each other.

  • The tester over exaggerates the test results to create a 'bigger' job for the remediation company and therefore they can charge more.

  • The cleaning company does a minimal job of remediation and therefore leaves some areas still contaminated

  • The tester returns and provides a report that the property is now fully remediated, when in fact it isn't

  • The owner is left with a property that is still contaminated but no way of knowing and can innocently sell or rent to unsuspecting new occupants.
